We are delighted to announce Catherine Couturier Gallery's latest exhibition Todd Webb: Across America, 1955, featuring the exceptional work of renowned photographer Todd Webb in collaboration with the Todd Webb Archive.
This exhibition, running concurrently with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's Robert Frank and Todd Webb: Across America, 1955, exclusively showcases Todd Webb's captivating photographs. In 1955, Todd Webb, alongside Robert Frank, received prestigious fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation for their ambitious U.S. survey projects. While Frank's iconic journey resulted in the groundbreaking book "The Americans," Webb embarked on a unique odyssey, traveling on foot, by boat, and bike across the United States to document the vanishing Americana and the evolving way of life.
Though unaware of each other's endeavors, both photographers received recommendations from the renowned Walker Evans, culminating in two distinct visual narratives. Frank's gritty, unconventional style delved into the darker facets of American existence, drawing from his immigrant perspective, while Webb's heartfelt, meticulously composed images celebrated the idiosyncrasies of American life. This exhibition invites viewers to explore the parallel and contrasting visions of two remarkable photographers, showcasing the multifaceted essence of "America" through their lenses.
