Marina Font: Mental Maps

 

 

Miami based photographer Marina Font, known for her long time interest in the expression of the female experience will be debuting a new show at Catherine Couturier Gallery on October 21^st, 2017 titled Mental Maps. An opening reception with the artist will take place on Saturday, October 21^st from 5-7pm.

The exhibitionwill feature a selection of mixed media artworks from her most recent ongoing series, Mental Maps which intends to metaphorically shed light on the female experience and address the complexities of feminine identity and the human psyche. She visually and manually expresses these intricate mysteries through her exploratory act of drawing with thread, embroidery, fabrics and appropriated crochet pieces onto photographic surfaces to blur the lines between the internal and external spaces of the body. She adds “The central axis of these very intuitive and visceral works is the approach to the female body perceived mainly through three planes: the biological, the psychological and the social, as well as the juxtapositions and connections among these themes.”

About the Artist:

Marina Font was born in Argentina in 1970. She studied design at the Martin Malharro School of Visual Arts, Mar del Plata, Argentina.  In 1998 she studied Photography at the Speos Ecole de la Photographie in Paris and earned a MFA in Photography from Barry University, Miami in 2009. Since then she has exhibited extensively at galleries, museums and cultural institution in the US and abroad. Her work is present in various public collections such as the MDC Museum of Art+Design, Miami,  the Boca Ratom Museum of Art, the LOWE Art Museum at The University of Miami,  FoLA, Fototeca Latinoamericana, Buenos Aires, Argentina, The Bunnen colection in Atlanta , the Girls' Club colection in Fort Lauderdale and various private collections throughout the world.

Mental Maps will be on display through November 25^th, 2017.
