Catherine Couturier Gallery is pleased to present Pots and Pictures, an exhibition that combines the photography of Leslie Field with the debut of Dr. Morris Weiner's ceramic art. Both artists, who live and work in Houston, bring their distinctive perspectives to this compelling showcase. The exhibition will be on view from September 7th through October 12th, 2024.
According to Lisa Volpe, curator at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston: Though they embrace different media, Leslie Field and Morris Weiner are driven by the same endless curiosity and sincerity. Enthusiasts of art in all its forms--music, literature, cooking, and visual art—Field and Weiner channel their interests and eagerness into their own artistic work. In turn, their eye-catching pots and engaging pictures reveal the openness and creative spirit of their makers
“I just like to play.”
Considering the skill and variety of his pots, it is surprising to learn that Morris Weiner signed up for his first ceramics class 2000--a night course at MFAH’s Glassell School of Art. Despite his admiration for the medium, he struggled at first. “Then, all of a sudden, this form came out of nowhere,” he recalls. 24 years later, Weiner spends 4-5 days a week in the studio, experimenting with texture, glazes and surfaces. Unafraid to embrace chance and new ideas, his pots reveal Weiner’s spontaneity and openness at the wheel.
“I like to see if the muse will speak to me.”
Referencing the variety of subjects and approaches in her lauded photographs, Leslie Field demurs, “I’m just constantly trying to figure out what I can pull out of the things I’ve been given.” Whether highlighting the graphic inks and smears of Polaroid prints, embracing the gentle mystery of shadows, creating visual poetry out of object combinations, or harnessing the power of circular repetition, Field’s work is grounded in chance and adaptation. Her photographs encourage the viewer to look again, exposing the often-unseen possibilities.
