Catherine Couturier Gallery is excited to present, in conjunction with Fotofest 2014, the work of an artist we first discovered through Fotofest: Lori Vrba. In this exhibition, our first of Vrba’s work, we will present two series: Drunken Poet’s Dream and her newest body of work, Assemblage.

Loose Ends

toned gelatin silver print, 15 x 15 inches, edition of 20

About her Assemblage work, Vrba writes, “My recent foray into the assemblage work feels like an organic extension and progression of my photography.  My imagery has a strong narrative component as does each assemblage piece.  I am a lifelong collector of curious oddities and I love transforming space, whether it be for an exhibition or my home.  The photographs are finished in encaustic for both the aesthetic and archival properties.  Bringing these elements together is just another way for me to tell a story.  My own.”

This idea of finding ways through her art to tell her own story is nothing new to Vrba, who grew up in a small Southeast Texas town.  She writes, “My life experiences have brought me to this place where I find myself overwhelmed with the drive to make photographs about who I am...what moves me, what I feel inside, what I believe to be sacred and enduring.  I make pictures to challenge, calm, excite and satisfy my mind and heart.  I share my work in hopes of leaving some permanent, telling mark on the world...that I was here.”
